This is How We Dream Parts 1 & 2

These video's prove to be a good source for gathering tips to be utilized in my classroom. The information shared by Dr. Miller force me to really think about how we were taught to write, and study. The learning process for today's student has to involve new technological ideas; the majority of the students play video games, or use instant text messaging, or some other kind of updated technology. I agree that this should be an incremental change rather than fundamental change thus allowing the idea to resonate will educational leaders.

We are witnessing the changes in the way we collect data; the different types of resources we use to collect the data. For example, we use to visit the Library to research or search for data but now we can utilize our computers. Most people in today's society rarely make trips to the library because they can research the information on the Internet; they can save that information on a hard drive or on a computer to preserve the data.

We have to aggressively defend the right for our children to learn in today's ever changing society. Dr. Miller posted a quota on his video " as if learning matters"; I think it is essential for each teacher and prospective teacher to become technology literate. The concept of the printed press, voice, and visual press collaborating to connect is really an eye-opener. For example, moving imagines placed in the background to support a voice or music prove that technology is full steam ahead.

Wendy Drexler - Network Student

After watching the video on network students I sudden thought that perhaps I'm not prepared to teach a network class. I feel that I am just really getting started as a technology literate student. Initially, the 21st century learning techniques appeared to be a lot of information to retain and a bit scary but after settling down I see how new students must feel on their first day of school. The network student really do need a teacher to connect them with a world of informational resources and guide their learning experience. Connectivism is proving to be the learning tool for the next generation and as an educator it is essential for me to learn. The utilizing of PLN's and Itune U are networks that connect the student to the world.

  1. I completely agree about not being quite prepared to teach the networked student. I think that, as future educators, if we continue to learn as much as we can about technology we will become more prepared.

You are right, though, the networked student still needs a mentor in a sense, and as teachers, we need to be prepared to take on this responsibility.

Technology is become more and more common and even more advanced as time goes by! Hopefully we will learn enough from Dr. Strange and our other teachers to prepare us for whats ahead in our career.

  2. I agree that the world is changing and students have many avenues to approach all information. When you say you do not feel you are ready to teach, don't forget that personal experience is the best teaching tool that you have. I feel like this class is actually hurting some people. It is taking away from the basics of teaching. The technology is only a tool that cannot replace the teacher.

  3. I wrote two long paragraphs responding to this post but then i hit the wrong button and they disappeared. I am on the way to a funeral in Baton Rouge and my wife is driving. I will rewrite my comments and post later.

  4. A number of students have said they do not feel they are ready to teach the connected student. Some even suggest that they don't want to teach connected students. And a few even imply that it is wrong to endorse, support or use this educational approach.

The jobs of tomorrow will require workers who can solve problems, learn without be told what to learn (that's the nature of solving problems), work cooperatively with other people throughout the world using the most effective communication technologies, formulate questions, know how to and do access information which is increasingly available in all places at all times, and engage in self-reflection and self-evaluation.

Conclusion: we will have to be connected ourselves and we will have to teach (or guide) connected students. So why are students having trouble in EDM310 where they are being forced to be independent learners? My guesses: 1. They have never had a chance to learn this way. 2. They have come to depend on structure provided by others and either do not know how to or do not supply the structure themselves. 3. They do not want to work very hard to learn. It is a lot easier to go to class, be polite, burp back what the teachers says you must learn, and get on with your life. 4. They do not want to shift the responsibility from the teacher to the learner (themselves).

Will our society survive if we do not change the way we teach? I am not sure about society, but I am certain the schools won't. And that won't take long at all. Just look at the telephone business, the newspaper business, the music industry. Education is next.
