Final Assignment Good Bye

Final Assignment

GOOD BYE

To class E, Dr. Strange, and Mr. Sullivan, I have enjoyed the time we have spend together as a class. I will treasure this experience; this class brings out the very best in you and I did my best. Sometimes in this class I really felt like a private investigator, searching for data to utilize on class assignment's. So I Would Like To Say Bye To All.

When I started this EDM310 class I knew about computers and some of the latest tools associated with computer usage. I considered myself technological literate before this class; after we begin to engage in some of our assignments and utilize some of the tools associated with modern technology I quickly found that I wasn't as technological literate as I supposed. This class has given me the opportunity to explore and experiment with the most current technological equipment.

Assignments due 25 April 2010

The video presentations for this weeks assignment were great; not just in words but in substance. To think that a 7th grade class has the independence of logging on to class assignments and working independently on assignments give us a glimpse of the future of education. This video reiterate the need for teachers to be technological literate, because students are utilizing most of these tools at home. For example, this 7th grade class is responsible for updating the data in their Personal Learning Environment (PLE), researching and storing data collected in their PLE.

The 2nd video causes you to pause and consider what your sentence in life is or will be. I plan to save this video for future use; I think this video will keep one grounded, focus, and on task. The video also support continued learning for teachers, a willingness to explore different teaching techniques to be an effective teacher. What is my sentence in life? Am I willing to dedicate myself to educating my students? Am I willing to endure the hardship that come with be dedicated? These question causes you to give an honest reflection of your intention.

Assignments due 18 April 2010

Good day to all, this weeks class assignment is in the form of a survey. I would like your opinion on three questions I think are essential for the advancement of education in today's technological age.

1. Will you utilize technological tools to teach in your classroom?

2. Have EDM310 prepared you to utilize these tools?

3. What would you change about our EDM310 class? If anything

Thank you for your participation in the survey; the data gathered will highlight the need to improve certain area of the class. Also, it will identify the type of teacher you are planning to be.

My name is Lamar J. King, I am a student at the University of South Alabama in Dr. Strange edm310 class. I watch your class video; great work. The hidden message I gathered from the video is to always attempt to improve your position. The early settlers continued with what appears to be the status quo but the invader appeared with weapons. Like the tradition teacher lecturing and not using the technological tools available.

Comments4Teachers (Week ending 4/4/2010 - 4/18/2010)

Ms. Shelly Terrell did a great job collecting data for her Teacher Reboot Camp. The information posted on Ms. Terrell's blog can help teacher become more effective in the classroom and engage all student's in hands-on learning. For example, Ozge Karaoglu and Terrell developed a wiki to help educators integrate technology effective for young learners.

Dr. Suess - The Zax

This was a great video with a very important message. The tale of two Zax's fit the mentality of many of today's teachers. The video depict teachers who are unwilling to change their teaching technique to address the ever changing needs of our students. Teacher's who fail to capture the creative talents of their students are doing the students a disservice. For example, at home students are utilizing different Internet tools, iPhone, ipods, and other gadgets but when they return to school a sit through lectures. To be an effective teacher, we must utilize every component available to give our students the best possible chance to be successful.

PS22 CHORUS "Landslide"

Great piece of work, out of the mouth of babe. The chorus is depicted in this video as pleading with adults (teacher's) to not hold them down. Allowing the students to blog can open a door for the students that have been closed to them for years. An effective teacher want to cultivate their students mind oppose to closing the opportunities. The students exhibited a tremendous amount of passion as they song from their heart the effect holding them back can have on their life. For example, "I've been afraid of changes, I built my life around you, and children get older too". The verse "I've climb a mountain and turn around"; implies that the students make marked progress then back to the traditional theme.

Comments4Kids Week #13

I really enjoyed the video "Manners Please" by this 4th grade class. To think students are being taught good manners in a classroom setting is great. A student who exhibit good manners normally is well thought of by the teachers and respected by other students. For example, wait your turn, excuse me, please, and thank you are ways to build character.

Mr. Chamberlain - Dear Kaia

I found the post on Mr. C's class very interesting; in that they represent a time that is emerging as the leading method of educating. I appreciate Mr. C's willingness to pursuit innovative ways to educate his students. I plan to utilized some of his teaching method; because you are only effective if your students learn and retain the subject matter.

As for the data in Mr. C's piece; I appreciate Kaia's father calling and talking to the students in the class. The idea to create a voice thread for Kaia was igneous; the voice thread will allow Kaia to listen to Mr. C's class. Each student appeared to have participated in the voice thread by say a few words. I think this is a great tool to use in the classroom, increasing the students knowledge of technology. I also think an activity like this really captures the students attention and make learning fun. Kaia's 1st photo essay and the lesson by her father gives her a sense of responsibility. The fact that one can find good in even the worst of things can prove to be a life saving lesson. The father's reading of "Last Child in the Woods" compel him to introduce Kaia to a side of nature that will impact her life forever.

An Open Letter To Educators: Morgan Bayda/Dan Brown

In reading the post by Ms. Bayda and watching the video post of Dan Brown I was force to think of reasons why the presentation of education has not changed. I agree with both Bayda and Brown on their assessment of education in today's society. The idea that a higher learning institution would trade information for money has never set well with me; but through Brown's piece I can really see why I always felt that way. For example, instructors lecture's for hours at a time, then review facts for the student to memorize for an exam.

I agree with discovering innovative ways to teach today's students. I sometimes felt like Brown in a sense that I wondered what benefit is in sitting in a classroom for hours listening to a professor. Because of my status as a non-traditional student; I see teaching techniques being utilized today that was utilized when I was in middle and high school. This statement support the theory that Brown has about not changing teaching techniques from the traditional style of teaching. It appears that educational institution are not doing everything possible to transition into this new age of technology.

I appreciate the way our EDM310 class is setup; we are encouraged to share information with each other. Dr. Strange and Mr. Sullivan invite questions and dialog, which foster an environment conducive to learning. Another important fact about our class is that we are also invited to search for information, be a
detective, explore this new world of technology.

John Sowash: The Electric Educator

I agree with the efforts of Mr. Sowash to educate teacher utilizing modern technology. Mr. Sowash implemented a training program at his High School called "Tuesday Tech Training". His effort is to introduce teachers to other options that can be utilized in teaching. On the 1st Tuesday of each month after school from 3:30 to 4:30, in this session he would teach how effective modern technology can be in the classroom. For example, he would teach how Google Earth, Google Docs, Wiki's in the classroom, and MS PowerPoint can be used.

John Sowash: The Electric Educator

I am very please with the level of commitment Mr. Sowash has displayed. This level of commitment speaks volumes, as it relates to the support electrical technology is receiving. I am really fun of the games created to stimulate the mind's of students and ushering them into an environment conducive to learning. Mr. Sowash idea also support learning being fun; my favorite game is "Who has the Biggest Brain". For example, on playfish the visual, logic, calculations, and memory games will prepare students for learning. Check out the games on www.playfish.com/games.

John Sowash - The Electric Educator

(MACUL) Conference

Mr. Sowash description of the MACUL conference prove to be a step in the right direction, as it relates to educating our children. I agree with Mr. Sowash idea of utilizing technical tools to assist in educating today's children. Mr. Sowash expected over 3,000 fellow educator's to support this conference; with presenters in several topic area's. For example, Transforming the Classroom with Google Docs forms Grand Gallery, Wiiboard: Making a Smartboard for Less Than $100., How Do You Use your Google Docs, and MI Learning on iTunes U.

I think this conference was a great start and I hope it gains support in the coming years. I wonder if perhaps we as a society loss some of our students by not being innovative?

ALEX - Alabama Learning Exchange
Alex is a website sponsored by the State of Alabama, it provide information and resources for teachers, parents, and students. You can access the website by clicking on this link http://alex.state.al.us. On this site you will find a personal workspace which will allow you to submit and revise documents.

When you access this website you will find eight icons; these icons has a wealth of information relating to teacher's needs. For example, you will find links to lesson plans, personal workspace, professional learning development, podcast treasury, courses of study, and lesson plan. I plan to utilize these resources in my classroom to help my students. For example, in the course of study under the mathematics section there is a lesson plan for different levels of math.

ACCESS - Alabama Connecting Classrooms, Educators, and Students Statewide

Access is a program also provided by the State of Alabama which provide quality distance learning. Students in Alabama are provided a valuable network of quality learning via web-based courses. ACCESS also have the support of three region support centers which train, hire, and support e-teachers.

While, scanning the website I found the web base contain videoconferencing which promotes innovative learning. One of the greatest benefits of ACCESS is that it provides instructions for Advance Placement, dual enrollment, and dual credit courses.

My comment was on "English with Rosa" blog "what's the weather Like"? In this video the kids used vocabulary words to describe the weather. It was a fun video where the kids drew pictures of the weather they were describing. They started by highlighting the three types of weather hot, warm, and cold. They concluded by describing the weather conditions.

Randy Pausch Lecture

Mr. Pausch really presented a good lecture with good information that I'm looking forward to implementing in my classroom. Pausch really touched on my reason for becoming a teacher; to help others. I want to give back to the children, some of the children have never experienced a trip outside of their own neighborhood. Creating an environment that fosters helping others will give the student a sense of pride and self worth.

The idea that dreaming can make a difference speaks volumes. Mr. Pausch indicated that he dreamed that he would achieve and followed his dream. I plan to utilize Pausch idea of dreaming in my classroom inspiring my students to dream, dream of achieving, dream of making something out of your life. Throughout the speech Pausch tells stories of how affective parents can be in their children lives. He use his own experience with his parents to help others see how effective good parenting can be.

Another well taking point was the desired to work as a team. Working as a team will benefit all parties involved. Setting goals and working as a team to accomplish those goals; staying focus and be patient will help you reach your goals. Pausch also motivated teacher by saying they are salesmen, they can actually sale the thought of getting an education to the students. Thus ushering the student into a mindset that learning can be fun. I will really look forward to creating an environment conducive to learning for the students.

Water Safety February 22, 2010

I really enjoyed the comments from the kids on water safety. Although, the comments were very soft, I still enjoyed them. I think every child who frequent the water whether by swimming, boating, or fishing they should have a course on water safety. Water safety awareness is grasping the attention of people around the region; For example, "less and less people are drowning because they are more educated on water safety. Sailing appears to be the least dangerous water sport because sailors have on life jackets.

This is How We Dream Parts 1 & 2

These video's prove to be a good source for gathering tips to be utilized in my classroom. The information shared by Dr. Miller force me to really think about how we were taught to write, and study. The learning process for today's student has to involve new technological ideas; the majority of the students play video games, or use instant text messaging, or some other kind of updated technology. I agree that this should be an incremental change rather than fundamental change thus allowing the idea to resonate will educational leaders.

We are witnessing the changes in the way we collect data; the different types of resources we use to collect the data. For example, we use to visit the Library to research or search for data but now we can utilize our computers. Most people in today's society rarely make trips to the library because they can research the information on the Internet; they can save that information on a hard drive or on a computer to preserve the data.

We have to aggressively defend the right for our children to learn in today's ever changing society. Dr. Miller posted a quota on his video " as if learning matters"; I think it is essential for each teacher and prospective teacher to become technology literate. The concept of the printed press, voice, and visual press collaborating to connect is really an eye-opener. For example, moving imagines placed in the background to support a voice or music prove that technology is full steam ahead.

Wendy Drexler - Network Student

After watching the video on network students I sudden thought that perhaps I'm not prepared to teach a network class. I feel that I am just really getting started as a technology literate student. Initially, the 21st century learning techniques appeared to be a lot of information to retain and a bit scary but after settling down I see how new students must feel on their first day of school. The network student really do need a teacher to connect them with a world of informational resources and guide their learning experience. Connectivism is proving to be the learning tool for the next generation and as an educator it is essential for me to learn. The utilizing of PLN's and Itune U are networks that connect the student to the world.

iTunes University

The collection of data found on itunes university was nearly unbelievable. iTunes has become one of my favor sites for educational data, it contain information for teachers and administrators alike. In this age of advanced technology itunes university can be helpful tool for first year teacher as well as seasoned teachers who are willing to learn new teaching techniques.

I really took interest in Steve Wheeler's podcast from the University of Plymouth; Wheeler posted famous quota's that really captured my attention. After reading some of these quota I found myself even more eager to learn and willing to help others. For example, "Education is what remains after one has forgotten everything he learned in school". (Einstein) Now, how or what do you teach a student? Wow, technology may be the answer. Another quota, "for the first time we are preparing students for a future we cannot clearly describe". (David Warlick) I will personally utilize itunes university to enhance my knowledge of podcast, as well as search for ways to create projects for my students.
Dr. Alice Christie's
I found Dr. Christie's research on technology in the classroom very useful and I plan to utilize some of the information discovered. Links to web designs and publication's can be use to enhance the learning of our students. In Ian Jukes podcast "Learning Environments for Digital Kids" I found useful information about children learning capabilities. For example, Jukes states "digital learners prefer receiving information from multiple multimedia sources".

The material provided on Dr. Christie's web page offers a teacher many different techniques to utilize in their classroom's. As I read the information posted on Dr. Christie's web page I found myself wondering why or how do we have unprepared teacher's; with the abundance of data available for teachers. I never really thought about a child playing video games, and computer games then returning to the classroom to a teacher at the chalkboard. Dr Tim Tyson, principal of Mabry Middle School is known as "the Pied Piper of Educational Technology" for his implementation of technological tools at his middle school. Dr. Tyson efforts proves that a change in the learning environment can directly affects the students learning ability.

As Mr. McClung describes his first year of teaching it reenforce the need to know the students you are teaching. His post really point out the feelings of thousands of teacher, perhaps even millions on their first day of teaching. I believe every teacher should take a interest in the students. For example, what kind of home life they have and what kind of support system is in place to help foster a positive learning environment. The fact that my students will be the most important thing I must utilize every positive example and tips to capture their attention. Some students are often place in or labeled (LD) Learning Disable by teachers without knowing all of the particalurs.

This article and podcast on wikipedia is alarming. The thought of major corporations, political organizations, and the federal government manipulating the data posted on wikipedia should raise the level of concerns. The data posted daily on wikipedia is trusted by millions of people and to suggest that some of the data hasn't properly researched for accuracy or changed is alarming. I really wonder what was in the 15 paragraphs deleted from wikipedia.

The bold reaction of Ms. Griffin should be appreciated for years to come. I think a disclaimer should be place on the home page of wikipedia stating that the information should be double checked for accuracy. It probably a good idea to always cross-reference posted data.

The Benefits of Podcasting in Education

I am becoming more and more intrigued with podcasting. While listening to the different podcast I realize the possible benefit s to a student. It can help a student present presentations and build self confidence. Podcasting also invite parents to be apart of their child learning; for example, parents can listen to or view video's with the child in the comfort of their home. I think this would support the ongoing effort of getting parents involved with their class and also give parents an avenue to reach the teacher.

As I look back over some of our earlier assignment, I'm getting a better sense of the ever changing world of technology. This efforts will allow the student that feel uncomfortable presenting in front of a class a level of comfort. I believe the students will work on speaking skill at home and in everyday situations.

Eagle Nest Radio and Class Blog

This podcast introduced another learning tool which I think will reach children. I believe that most students must learn by application oppose to lecture; with that being said Trey, Jackson, and Mark appeared to really enjoy their role in the podcast. I think assigning a student a topic to research to participate in a podcast covers many areas of studying. For example, searching for the data, reading multiple sources to gather important information, and selecting the best data. These efforts help develope the students critical thinking skill; hence, a well rounded student.

Podcast Assignments

I found useful information in these podcast. In viewing these podcast, I was looking for new teaching techniques that I can implement in my classroom when I become a teacher. The math, math, math 58 lend me some ideas on how I can best utilize the smartboard. I realize that some student are visual learning's so the smartboard can capture their attention and help usher them into an area of comfort. The animation tool on the smartboard will allow me to create useful and fun loving material to reach very child.

I found the ConnectLearning podcast to be the one I would lease recommend. The sound was distorted, which made it hard to hear what was actually being said. I sure it was useful information but it was to much going on too get a clear understanding. I really enjoyed the EdTechtalk podcast. Although I didn't necessarily see anything that I would utilized in class but I did appreciate the professor's position on technology and it's place in education today.

Media Literacy

As I watched these video's, I was really taken by the children in Mrs. Cassidy's primary class. These students proved to not only know how to blog but they were also able to teach (show) other how to blog. It is evident that Mrs. Cassidy has utilized her class time wisely and captured her class attention using technology. I think technology will be a major component in reaching today's children and preparing them for an uncertain future.

Garys Social Media Count

Amazing, the data found in Gary's Social Media Count is truly amazing. As a teacher in a 21st century class it means prepare for constant change. A student can change in behavior in a second, an effective teacher must adjust and maintain classroom control. I plan to learn as much as I can about each student, parents, home environment, and siblings. This data will enable me to be creative in problem solving techniques.

Is It Okay to Be A Technologically Illiterate teacher?

As I read the post of Karl Fisch, I agree with the position he took after a frustrating day of work. I would be embarrass if I did make every effort to stay abreast with the changing teaching methods. Although Mr. Fisch had a change of mind, his depiction of a teacher technologically illiterate in the 21st century is unacceptable. For example, Mr. Fisch mention of a parent/teacher meeting where the parent indicate they were no good in a subject really set the tone for learning.

While it is not a good practice to record an option being frustrated, Fisch appeared to have committed time to research the data. As a teacher, it would be extremely important to me to create an environment conducive to learning. I support the teachers workshop's and mandatory training because this could be learning tool for the teachers. Thank you Mr. Fisch for creating this opportunity for Dr. Strange's EDM 310 class to comment on such a hot topic. Address a feedback to http://edm310.blogspot.com/.

"It's Not About the Technology" by Kelly Hines

I have read the post by Mrs. Hines as part of an assignment for Dr. Strange's EDM 310 class. I fully concur with Mrs. Hines theory that technology along is not the answer for education in the 21st century. Education in the classroom always begin with the teacher/instructor and their attitude towards teaching. I believe it is extremely important for teacher to recognize the constant changes in student and adjust their teaching method accordingly.

I believe in the technology of today; I agree that it is crucial for today's students to be well versed but without an innovative teacher these goals will not be realized. I think a motivated teacher will find ways to reach every student and would feel they weren't successful if every student didn't retain the information. Teaching should always be about the students, how they learn, and what they learn. Innovative teaching methods which create an environment of learning will usher the student mindset into a learning mode. I welcome all feedback and comments on this post to our class blog at http://edm310.blogspot.com/

A Vision of Students Today

As a student in Dr. Strange's EDM 310 class at the University of South Alabama, I found this video clip very informative. It depicts the learning environment of today's student to that of a 19th century student. To date I can say my college experience has been eventful, not the dreaded experience depict in this clip. For example, the instructor's have made a consorted effort to keep the classroom size at a maximum of less than 30 students.

I found several of the facts presented in this clip unacceptable for today's students. For example, a student read 8 books during the term opposed to over 1,200 emails. Another alarming thought is most graduates will probably have jobs that don't even exist now. Technology along can not save today's student but if utilize properly it will help advance the learning capabilities of today's students. I think this EDM 310 class is making a major step toward preparing today's student to be viable part of society. I would add the use of modern technology in a classroom setting, this captures my college experience.

Vicki Davis: Harness Your Students' Digital Smarts

I am a student at the University of South Alabama in Dr. Strange EDM310 class, this video was another good learning tool. Ms. Davis used a method of teaching that would capture the students attention, allowing them to experiment on classroom computers. Some students learn best during application opposed to lecture for several reasons. I was really taken by how Ms. Davis utilized her teaching tools too capture the minds of her class.

I commend Ms. Davis for her efforts, bringing digital technology to a rural town in Georgia. The students also seems eager to learn as they experimented with digital technology, allowing them to connect with students around the world. I think the sign of a great instructor/teacher is one that suggest I don't know everything about this topic but we will discover the unknown together. Hey, that sounds like Dr. Strange.

Sir Ken Robinson: The Importance of Creativity

I am a student at the University South Alabama in Dr. Strange EDM310 class and the video lecture was great. I agree with Sir Robinson's concept of educating our children utilizing their creative skill. I am going to save this video clip to refer to as I teach my classes. The idea of educating our children by tapping into their creative skills oppose to recommending medication.

Sir Robinson stated "he believe we educate our children out of creativity instead of being educated by using creativity". This video also force me to think about the number of students that have slip through the crack and their real talent hasn't been realized. I think as we adjust to the changing society the teaching techniques should also to reach the children that display other talents.

Mr. Winkle Wakes

As a student at the University of South Alabama in Dr. Strange EDM310 class this video clip was very informative. After 100 years of sleep it appears that Mr. Winkle had trouble adjusting to the changes he found upon awaking. These changes cause Mr. Winkle to feel sick, which is common if a person find it hard to adjust to changes.

I really enjoyed this clip because it seems to imply that some students will be left behind because they can't find their comfort zone. For example, Mr. Winkle notice the changes while in the hospital as they use a breathing machine to help patients breath. Mr. Winkle finally found comfort in the classroom as it was what he remember before his sleep but changes were on the horizon.

Did you Know

I am joining the list of Dr. Strange EDM310 students watching the "Did you know" clip. Very informative, to become a paperless society we have to rely on advanced technology but I was unaware of some of the percentage presented in the clip. It really make one think of how depend we are as a nation on technology and how the use of technological tools have invaded our everyday lives. For example, the use of cell phone and the growing use of ipods.

This clip I think just touch the surface of where technology is going. The fact that information is being made available instantly through the use of technological instrument. I didn't know the extent to which technology has grown but it is a real eye-opener.
